Jets Trainers Help Air Passenger in Distress

Posted Feb 24, 2014

Dave Zuffelato and Josh Koch used their experience as assistant athletic trainers with the New York Jets to assist a fellow air traveler having a medical emergency a week ago.

Zuffelato and Koch were aboard a flight on Monday, Feb. 17, that was headed from Newark Liberty Airport to Indianapolis, where they were joining our contingent at the NFL Scouting Combine.

The door on the plane had just closed when a passenger alerted others on the plane that an elderly female passenger sitting next to her was in severe distress.

A doctor on the plane, who identified himself as an ICU cardiologist, along with Zuffelato and Koch, worked together to remove the woman from the plane to the jetway and then administer CPR for about five minutes on the jetway before paramedics arrived.

Shortly after the paramedics took over the medical supervision, the three returned to the plane and continued on to Indianapolis.

"We're conditioned to help people," said Zuffelato. "When the situation arose, the doctor, Josh and I did our best to help."
