Jets Release RB Mike Goodson

Posted Jun 18, 2014

Sixth-Year Player Didn’t Report for This Week’s Mandatory Full-Squad Minicamp

Updated, 3:38 p.m. ET

The Jets have released running back Mike Goodson.

Goodson, one of the first signings by John Idzik and his front office after he arrived as the Jets general manager a year ago, hadn't been participating in our voluntary offseason program since it began in late April. When he didn't report in for the mandatory full-squad training camp on Monday night  or for Tuesday's first day of camp, the team decided to part ways with the sixth-year back.

"We are releasing Mike today with the designation of left squad," Idzik said in a news conference this morning. "Obviously it's disappointing. Like we do with all our players, we gave Mike, we feel in good conscience, every opportunity here with the Jets, and unfortunately it didn't work out. So we made the move ultimately that we feel is best for the team."

"I think with all our players, we provide them an opportunity," head coach Rex Ryan said, echoing his GM. "It's unfortunate that it never worked out. We wish him the best moving forward."

Ryan added that he attempted to reach out to Goodson recently and was not successful.

"No question it concerns me," he said. "The last time I talked to him was probably the last day he was here in the offseason when he was rehabbing an injury, probably two, three months ago."

Goodson was involved in a traffic stop and arrested on drug and weapon charges shortly after his arrival last year. He was suspended for the first four regular-season games by the NFL for violation of the league's substance abuse policy.

He returned to action for Games 5-6 at Atlanta and home against Pittsburgh and in those two games combined provided an offensive spark with 61 yards on seven carries and 19 yards on two receptions. But he injured his knee against the Steelers and was placed on injured reserve on Oct. 15. He was still contending with his knee rehab and his legal issues at the time of his release.
