Mornhinweg Reportedly to Take Offensive Reins

Posted Jan 18, 2013

On the same afternoon the Jets hired John Idzik to be their next general manager, it appears they may have landed their next offensive coordinator as well.  Adam Caplan of PhiladelphiaEagles.com first reported Friday that the Jets are expected to tab Marty Mornhinweg as the team's OC.

Mornhinweg spent the past 10 seasons in Philadelphia, running the West Coast offense with the Eagles.  An offensive innovator, Mornhinweg entered the NFL as an offensive assistant with the Green Bay Packers in 1995 on Mike Holmgren’s staff.

Five quarterbacks have earned Pro Bowl honors working under Mornhinweg: Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb, Brett Favre, Steve Young and Jeff Garcia.   After taking over play-calling duties with the Birds in 2006, Mornhinweg orchestrated an offensive attack that — entering last season — led the NFL in 25-plus-yard pass plays (219) and fifth in points per game (25.1).

Last season, the Jets ranked 30th in total offense and totaled 10 offensive points or less in eight games.  Mark Sanchez suffered though his most difficult year as a pro, completing 54% of his passes with 13 TDs and 26 turnovers (18 INTs & 8 Fumbles Lost).

In a Dec. 31st news conference, Rex Ryan told the media that he wanted an attack-style, unpredictable offensive attack.  Mornhinweg is an accomplished coordinator and he has tasted success with multiple quarterbacks.  It will be interesting to hear his thoughts on the Jets QB situation when/if he addresses the media.
