Jets-Giants Real-Time Analysis

Posted Aug 22, 2014

After 2 Quarters of Play, Eric Allen Gives His Real-Time Reactions

Good Start: The Jets were clearly the better team in the first half, jumping out to a 10-0 lead. Nick Folk nailed a 31-yarder in the first and the Jets increased their lead on a pretty play action connection from Geno Smith to rookie TE Jace Amaro. Giants closed the gap to 10-7, culminating a 91-yard scoring drive on a 15-yard touchdown from Eli Manning to Rueben Randle. Giants wideout beat veteran LeQuan Lewis, who was inserted into action after Antonio Allen exited after a head injury.

Loaded at RB: Chris Johnson looks just fine in green. He continues to showcase his trademark speed and  picked up 26 yards on five carries in the first in addition to a 17-yard gain on a screen.  It is really an embarrassment of riches at RB for the Jets as Chris Ivory then came away hammering at Big Blue in the second. Not only one of the most talented power backs, Ivory doesn’t get enough credit for his ability to bounce and get down field in a hurry.

Geno a Year Later: Last year, Geno Smith struggled with the Giants blitzes in this annual preseason clash. The second-year passer is oozing with confidence now and was just really steady in the first half.  Looked like an old vet on the 27-yard hook-up to Eric Decker, using his eyes to look off DBs.

Near Takeaways: After turning the Bengals over three times last week, the Jets had their hands on a couple of balls in the first stanza.  Darrin Walls jumped an out intended for Rueben Randle and had visions of a pick-six, but the Giants wideout made like a corner and came up with a PD.  Then newcomer Jason Babin got his first preseason sack and stripped Eli Manning, but the ball was recovered by the Giants. Late in the second quarter, Muhammad Wilkerson racked up a strip-sack of Manning and forced a 3rd and 20. An apparent Kyle Wilson interception in the final seconds of the half was reversed by replay officals.

Q & Pyror Impress: Perhaps the most athletically gifted pass rusher on the Jets, Quinton Coples did a fine job against the run early. And the whirling dervish known as rookie Calvin Pryor was all over the field in his first start.

Jets Lineup Alterations: The secondary shuffling continued for the Green & White as Darrin Walls and Antonio Allen got the start on the outside at cornerback while Calvin Pryor was inserted into the starting lineup at safety.  Rookie WR-PR Jalen Saunders, who is awaiting medical tests after a car accident last week, and CB Dee Milliner (ankle) did not dress.  Veteran corner Dimitri Patterson (leg ailments) was a late scratch and TE Jeff Cumberland (Achilles) missed his second consecutive contest. Amaro took Cumberland's place in the lineup. Rookie ‘backer Ikemefuna Enemkpali also did not suit up.
