EA: A Return Trip to Revis Island?

Posted Mar 11, 2014

With free agency just a couple of hours away, it is time to address the elephant in the room.

This one dons No. 24 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but ESPN Insider Adam Schefter reported Monday that the Bucs will release Darrelle Revis if they can’t get something back for him in a trade.  If Revis is released, the Jets will get the Bucs’ fourth-round selection (No. 100 overall) instead of their third-round choice (No. 69 overall).

After releasing their former No. 1 CB in Antonio Cromartie, the Jets do have a need at cornerback.  The Green & White have been linked to Titans CB Alterraun Verner during the NFL’s three-day negotiating period and other names that are scheduled to hit the market today include Aqib Talib, Vontae Davis, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Captain Munnerlyn, Tarell Brown and Walter Thurmond.

Some members of Jets Nation wonder if a Revis return is in the cards.  You can never say never, but a return engagement — on the surface — would seem improbable.

The 5’11”, 198-pound Revis, a Pittsburgh product who was originally selected by the Jets in the first round (No. 14 overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft, played his first six seasons with New York’s AFC representative while registering 19 INT and 98 PD.

Then last April, GM John Idzik Idizk traded Revis in exchange for the Bucs’ 13th overall selection (NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Sheldon Richardson) and the aforementioned conditional selection in the upcoming 2014 Draft.

Now if the Bucs do indeed walk away from the NFL’s highest paid cornerback (Revis has a reported $16 million cap figure for 2014), that will be the second club in less than one calendar year that didn’t see eye-to-eye with Revis about his value.
