Douzable Dances Back to the Jets

It’s official. Defensive lineman Leger Douzable has agreed to terms with the New York Jets.

Although he was an unrestricted free agent for a couple of days, he really “just wanted to see a little bit of what was out there” and had no intentions of changing uniforms for the eighth time in his seven-year career.

“I knew I wanted to stay,” he told newyorkjets.com. “I was just more comfortable coming back to this scheme, and I love playing for Rex [Ryan] and I love the coaching staff, so it was kind of an easy decision for me to come back.”

Douzable’s easy decision was made easier, he said, when the Jets announced that defensive line coach Karl Dunbar would return for the 2014 season earlier this offseason. Dunbar was the D-line coach of the Minnesota Vikings in 2008 when Douzable was brought in as an undrafted free agent.

“He was a really big part of me coming back,” Douzable said. “When he got signed, I knew that was going to weigh on my chances of whether I wanted to come back or not. Just being able to play with him for another year was really big.”

Leger Douzable was part of a five-man defensive line rotation that helped us finish third in the NFL in rush yards allowed per game and first in rush yards per attempt last season. The 6’4”, 284-pound Central Florida product set a career high with 1.5 sacks while also totaling 22 tackles, 10 QB hurries and a fumble recovery.

“A lot of people are saying our D-line can be, if not the best, one of the best in the league,” he said, “and we just want to go out there and prove that last year wasn’t a fluke and build on that.”

The Jets originally signed Douzable, 27, as a free agent in July. He had previously been on the 53-man or practice squad rosters of the Titans, Jaguars, Lions, Rams, Giants and Vikings.

“I’m glad the deal got done and all sides are happy," he said, "and I’m just ready to go to work right now.”
