HS Coach of the Week: Skip Stevens, White Plains

Posted Sep 24, 2013

The New York Jets announced today that Michael “Skip” Stevens of White Plains High School has been named this week's recipient of the New York Jets High School Coach of the Week Award. For his efforts, he will receive $1,000 to benefit the school’s football program, and he will be presented with a certificate from the Jets.

The award, in its 18th year, is given to a coach in the tristate area who serves the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve, and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to their community, their school and their student-athletes.

Stevens has 29 years of football coaching experience and is in his ninth season as the head coach of the Tigers with six playoff berths and an overall coaching record of 39-36. Skip was honored as the 2008 Section 1 AA South Coach of the Year after leading the Tigers to a one-loss regular season.

In 2007, Stevens founded the White Plains Football Association, a non-profit organization that sponsors community activities and provides scholarships to student-athletes in need. Skip is a teaching assistant, job coach and job developer at White Plains High School. Thanks to his efforts, dozens of students have received internships and jobs.

On Friday, White Plains rallied from a three-touchdown deficit to defeat the Mahopac Indians, 29-27, for the biggest comeback in school history to improve its record to 3-0 after finishing last season 1-7. The Tigers' next game will be in Wappingers Falls, N.Y., on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 1:30 p.m. when they face the Ketchum Indians.
